Note - Somewhat difficult to tie up. All are marked 0-xxxxx on the engine cowling, with the full serial written in small font on the starboard fuselage just behind the cockpit. Only the last 5 digits tie up ... I had to search for the first 2 digits. Below I've provided what's marked on the aircraft, the actual serial, and the c/n in brackets. This was all researched from Joe Baugher's website.

"21292" - being rebuilt inside hangar. Cannot find any ref. to this one.
"80J" - on flatbed truck, being prepared for delivery to Ft. Rucker. This one had flight-training (day-glo orange) markings.

TUS 17 NOV 2001

Notes:
* Davis Monthan has shifted operations over to TUS, while the single runway
at DMA is undergoing repaving. Many A-10s are based on the western ramp,
and can be seen from the parking lot near the tower. The land-side area
where the A-10s are parked is off-limits, closed off by concrete barricades.
No C-130s were seen.

* The resident SE210 Caravelle, N777VV, has been moved temporarily to the
main cargo ramp ... allowing for a decent photograph in the afternoon.

Tucson (TUS) 11.03.01

Notes - Hamilton Aviation is still a bit slow at the moment. Work is only
performed on a single shift, M-F (a few months ago they were doing 3 shifts
7 days a week). Therefore, on a Saturday morning, the area is deserted. If
you're lingering around reading off numbers, it may attract attention. A
brief stop at the security hut may alleviate any concerns.

N903RC, a derelict B732 hulk that had spent most of its time near the Lorair
hangar, is now dumped on its belly at the Pima College hangar. TriStar
XU-600 is still at the college also, full c/s & titles.

N86426, a B72S that was inside Hamilton's complex undergoing a freight-door
installation, turned out to be the all-white B727 noted a few weeks ago
without any markings. It was noted at Goodyear on 26Oct.

Tucson (TUS) 10.27.01

Notes: Another *slow* day at Tucson. Hamilton's has slowed down
considerably, unfortunately the only interesting visitors this month left
soon after they arrived! Of note below, a new-build Challenger ready to
emerge from the finishing hangar.

I was stopped by an Airport Police officer, and released after the
obligatory questioning & discussion. In our conversation, I learned that
any future visitors that wish to visit TUS and linger around the airport
"spotting" should call the Airport Police Dispatcher and advise them of your
identity and intent.

PHX NOTE - 10/24/01

Currently at PHX (13:00 on 24Oct) is TJ-CAE, Cameroon Airlines 'newest'
B747-300. This aircraft was at MZJ previously, and *should be* one of the
ex-Swissair birds. I don't know which one (which c/n) at this point. I'm
assuming the aircraft is stopping over on its delivery flight.

- No changes since last visit. N54CD and N89CD, both B737-400 ex Citybird,
arrived on Sunday 14Oct.

- Viscount 4X-AVE, which was removed from TUS in Sep 1998, has its fuselage
dumped on the ground near the Pima College hangar. Presumably this was
stored at a DM scrapyard and now brought back to the airport. Arkia
markings clearly visible.

A note about recent terrorist activities and spotting.

Cactus Wings has received many questions from people planning trips to the Phoenix and Tucson area regarding spotting and increased security. From what we have noticed so far, there have been reports of people being asked to leave the perimeter fence areas by airport police. We highly recommend not to even attempt to visit Luke Air Force Base. Roads in the area are closed and security is very high. If you have a trip already planned to visit the are we suggest you contact one of the following numbers and ask how the airport is dealing with security and photographers.

Contact numbers:

Phoenix Area

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) - Airport Operations (602) 273-2035, Airport Police (602) 262-7626

Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR) - (623) 932-1200

Mesa Falcon Field (FFZ) - (480) 644-2444

Williams Gateway Airport (IWA) - (480) 988-1013

Scottsdale Airport (SDL) - (480) 312-2321

Tucson Area

Tucson International (TUS) - Airport Authority (520) 573-8100

Tucson Ryan (RYN) - (520) 883-9800

Additional helpful reports from spotters in the area can also be found on the Yahoo Phoenix Spotters Club.

Some more DM scrapyard notes
=======================
* Western Int'l -
N308D L-188 full National Science Foundation c/s, parked

* K-Tech Aviation -
They have moved locations from near DMI Aviation to now where Bob's Airpark
used to be. Bob's is no longer around, all of the helicopters have been
moved to a nearby scrapyard. K-Tech has 6 or 7 ex-AMARC B707 airframes, all
easily seen from the road. I haven't stopped to log them yet as I have them
all when they were inside AMARC.

* DMI Aviation -
Nearby, the ex-USAir DC-9 fuselages still remain dumped in the grass. From
a past log, these are N940VJ, N989VJ, and N975VJ. Also nearby is C-131 5781
in faded USCG markings.

* National Aircraft -
MANY ex-AMARC B707s are now in this yard. The USAF auctioned a 'lot of 20'
(or 25) airframes a few months ago, and maybe more to come. I'll try to tie
these airframes up when the weather is cooler - they are packed in there
tightly. I also spotted ex USAir DC-9 N956VJ still visible - as a pile of
scrap metal!! Reg was visible on one piece of metal (for those desparate
few)..

Rantoul, KS
Dodson International

A family wedding in Kansas City allowed me the chance to hunt down and
explore Dodson's scrapyard in little Rantoul, KS. Thinking I was completely
lost, I crested a small hill and sighted their pole-mounted Jetstar! It was
a Saturday which meant the place was closed, but fortunately Russ Reeves,
the avionics sales manager & his family were out on the private lake. He
was kind enough to let me have full photographic access to the scrapyard.
Unfortunately, I only had about an hour to spend, and even worse only a
half-bottle of water - it was 98F outside with very high humidity. So, with
two cameras, logbook and pen, and said bottle of water, I managed to
scribble down what I could. I focused mainly on larger civil types and also
got a few easy-to-read bizjets:

????? Be1900 marked "Regionn Air"

???? Fk28 nose, all white

N782AL DC-8, ATI c/s
[245] Fa20, Republic of Liberia markings (EL-VDY)
LV-VBY MD80 Aerolineas Argentinas
* 2 ex-AA Boeing fuselage sections

Across the road, in a large grassy field:
N7500A DC-3
* plus a Convair 240 and 2 derelict Be-18s, all unidentified.

Most of the aircraft fuselages have type and c/n data written in red marker
on the front fuselage. There are simply hundreds of aircraft here, and Russ
told me they keep bidding for more. If you're planning a visit - call ahead
to get permission and ramp access, try to visit on a weekday, and plan more
than half a day. If access is granted, it would be well worth it. I
brought a digital camera since most of the aircraft hulks were
not 'slide' worthy - and I will be posting the results on Cactus Wings for
inspection.

I can't help too much with directions, as I was following a map that I was
borrowing. I can offer this - Dodson's is SOUTH of Rantoul about 1 mile,
and any good map or map program should be able to find Rantoul, Kansas.
Driving time was about 25 mins from the outskirts of Kansas City.

Any help with the ????s would be appreciated. I am corresponding back and
forth with Dodson's about some of the aircraft but I wanted to get this log
posted as quickly as I could.

and DC-9-14 still parked in front of Signature Hangar.

Trip report: PHX-LAS-PHX

PHX 28 JUN 2001
=============
Noted while we were waiting for N724SW to take us to LAS...
N107YV* BE1 Ex USAir Express c/s, in active service for HP Express
- and a NW B747 at the maint. hangar, which was not identified.

Flight was 1 hour exactly to LAS and upon touchdown on 25L noticed N132NJ,
an MD87 in Vanguard's striking new color scheme (ex Reno Air aircraft).
Just the usual National, Southwest, and America West selection when we
arrived, so didn't bother logging anything else.

Temp departing PHX: 101F Temp arriving LAS: 102F

LAS 29 JUN 2001
=============
Took about 2 hours in the late afternoon (Temp: 111F) and did a spin around
the airport.

All are parked against the western perimeter fence and are easily seen.
Photos are a problem due to positioning ... I will post my digital photos on
the Cactus Wings website soon.

Then it was off to photograph anything moving, with the late afternoon sun I
was hoping to catch aircraft positioned for takeoff ... highlighting the
aircraft against the mountains. Success! Saw and made a few 'new' types as
well...

N682CA* B727 Champion
D-ABUC* B763 Condor
N757NA* B757 National ... With National in bankruptcy, this was the
one reg. that I wanted to photograph .... Hightlight of the afternoon was
watching the 727s due 10,000' takeoff rolls and low climbouts!

Over the top I noted BA B744 headed to LAX. Judging from the time it was
noted, I think it was G-BNLR on the BA269.

LAS 30 JUN 2001
=============
Time to head back to PHX. Before turning in the car, I jumped out and shot
photos of N132NJ, the Vanguard MD87 ... before that one slips away into
bankruptcy as well.

Only other aircraft that was noted was N305AS, another Alaska B737-900.
N519SW took us home to PHX, exactly 1 hour from gate to gate. And again, of
course, the outside air temp was 102F, both in LAS and PHX (at 1900hrs!!)

PHX 01 JUL 2001
=============
I had to venture out from our relative's house early in the morning and try
my luck at PHX with some new aircraft types. I was very pleased! Not
pleased with the rising humidity (monsoon storm season is here) and temps
already past 90F at 0800 hrs!

One thing I found out, there is a big difference between 100-102F and 111F
!!!!!

Happy spotting everybody.
