Vancouver (YVR) 2.16.02

Met up with local spotter Steve Wilcox on an overcast, drizzly day typical
for this time of year in Vancouver. Prior to my visit, I researched what
aircraft were based and the 'spots to hit' ... but having Steve as a guide
was invaluable. Much of the information available on the web is out of
date, especially in light of 11Sep. With this in mind here are my
observations....

- The terminals have remained the same - only ticketed passengers beyond the
security checkpoint. Even so, all exterior views are behind double glassed
'sterile' walkways, making photography impossible and even hampering viewing
with binoculars. Rain & mist on the glass is a problem.

- The Fairmont Hotel is located practically on top of the north terminal.
The hotel is situated parallel with the runways, so all rooms are either
north-facing or south-facing, and it appeared that they would all offer a
good view. Probably pricy though.

- Templeton Road is parallel with the north runway and curves around the
east end of the north runway, intersecting the main entrance road. Good for
photography if landing westerly. Also good for logging north-side
movements, aircraft at the terminal, and the ex-Canadian (now AC) hangar
residents. Numerous driveways and shoulder (verge) areas to park a car.

- Many side streets south of the entrance road, but north of the south
runway complex. Good for photography & logging cargo ramp aircraft, as well
as AC hangar residents.

- The south side of the airport is where the FBOs and south terminal are
located ... Many bizjets, GA, floatplanes, and turboprops present. The
ex-AC Viscount is derelict (but complete, with engines and props) alongside
the road, in a small technical school complex. Too many nooks & crannies to
describe, but 'follow your nose' and you'll see everything. Also provides
views (seemed a bit distant) of the south runway & aircraft at the terminal.

While spending time logging the turbos, biz, and Beavers, I missed quite a
few movements. The mist is just enough to prevent a quick 'turn of the
bins' and read off the small C- registrations.
