Trip report: PHX-LAS-PHX

PHX 28 JUN 2001
=============
Noted while we were waiting for N724SW to take us to LAS...
N107YV* BE1 Ex USAir Express c/s, in active service for HP Express
- and a NW B747 at the maint. hangar, which was not identified.

Flight was 1 hour exactly to LAS and upon touchdown on 25L noticed N132NJ,
an MD87 in Vanguard's striking new color scheme (ex Reno Air aircraft).
Just the usual National, Southwest, and America West selection when we
arrived, so didn't bother logging anything else.

Temp departing PHX: 101F Temp arriving LAS: 102F

LAS 29 JUN 2001

Took about 2 hours in the late afternoon (Temp: 111F) and did a spin around
the airport.

All are parked against the western perimeter fence and are easily seen.
Photos are a problem due to positioning ... I will post my digital photos on
the Cactus Wings website soon.

Then it was off to photograph anything moving, with the late afternoon sun I
was hoping to catch aircraft positioned for takeoff ... highlighting the
aircraft against the mountains. Success! Saw and made a few 'new' types as
well...

N307AS B739 Alaska (very loooonnnng)

N773AT B727 ATA o/c

Shuttle aircraft)

N378UA B733 UA

N72GA* Be1900 Alpine Air titles, ex Gulfstream c/s
N682CA* B727 Champion
D-ABUC* B763 Condor
N757NA* B757 National ... With National in bankruptcy, this was the
one reg. that I wanted to photograph .... Hightlight of the afternoon was
watching the 727s due 10,000' takeoff rolls and low climbouts!

Over the top I noted BA B744 headed to LAX. Judging from the time it was
noted, I think it was G-BNLR on the BA269.

LAS 30 JUN 2001
=============
Time to head back to PHX. Before turning in the car, I jumped out and shot
photos of N132NJ, the Vanguard MD87 ... before that one slips away into
bankruptcy as well.

Only other aircraft that was noted was N305AS, another Alaska B737-900.
N519SW took us home to PHX, exactly 1 hour from gate to gate. And again, of
course, the outside air temp was 102F, both in LAS and PHX (at 1900hrs!!)

PHX 01 JUL 2001
=============
I had to venture out from our relative's house early in the morning and try
my luck at PHX with some new aircraft types. I was very pleased! Not
pleased with the rising humidity (monsoon storm season is here) and temps
already past 90F at 0800 hrs!

Hope to get some of these photos posted on Cactus Wings later today. Its
back to the air-conditioned (yea) land of work and family life (bummer).
One thing I found out, there is a big difference between 100-102F and 111F
!!!!!

Happy spotting everybody.
